A Publishing House
Rooted in Black culture.
Written in dark ink.
JAVAHouse is a publishing imprint dedicated to Black American voices in speculative fiction — the fantastical, the horrific, and the worlds that live at the crossroads between them.
We believe Black imagination is boundless. Our stories reach into history, folklore, and into the unseen — and pull out something true.
Every envelope and every page is a door. Step through.
"Some doors open from the other side."
A monthly snail mail subscription & alternate reality game
Each month, a handwritten letter arrives from Chamberlain — a hidden enchanted town built by escaped Black Americans in the woodlands of Alabama in the late 1800s. Written by the protagonist to her cousin: you.
Original illustrations bring Chamberlain to life — its people, its mysteries, its creatures. Each piece is crafted by our resident artist. Some things are better seen than described. Look closely.
A cipher waits at the bottom of the envelope. The Society rewards those who look carefully, think slowly, and follow where the clues lead. The door only opens for those who find the key.
"The woods remember what the world forgot."
Launching soon — be among the first Keepers.
JAVAHouse is not yet open to submissions — but we will be soon. We are building something intentional, and when the doors open, we want to hear from Black American writers and artists working in literary, horror, and the speculative.
"We are looking for stories that haunt, worlds that breathe, and voices that have never been given enough room."
When submissions open, we will be seeking short fiction, serialized work, illustrated narratives, and collaborative projects rooted in Black American culture and imagination. Horror. Myth. Fantasy. The blurry space between.
Leave your email below and we'll notify you the moment submissions open.
